Sustainability through Slow Fashion

The talk revolving around sustainability isn’t a new one, in fact it is here to stay. Not only is it important to understand the gravity of it, but it is also truly the way to go forward in an industry like ours. It is a well-known fact that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world. 20% of industrial water pollution comes from textiles treatment and dyeing. Only 15% of our clothing is actually recycled or donated, while the rest is dumped in landfills, which form 5.2% of all landfill waste. So, circling back to the fact that it’s truly becoming not just a conversation, but also a time-sensitive necessity. What we do, is our part in our own little ways, while taking everyone who shop with us accomplices to a sustainable future.

The switch to Slow Fashion

Clothing has become so cheap, that it is now seen as essentially disposable. Research shows that 90% of our clothing is thrown away before it needs to be. When it comes to fabric, we believe that quality trumps quantity. Put simply, slow fashion is the opposite of fast fashion. It encompasses an awareness and approach to fashion that considers the processes and resources required to make clothing. In other words, rather than spending on mass produced articles, investing in high quality unique clothes is a step towards the right direction and helps solving part of the problem.

We at Ranng, aim to bring our sustainability ambitions to action and want to provide a space where our ideas of sustainable fashion can be realized and be easily achievable for those who want to make a difference but don’t know how.

Why should you choose slow fashion?

Among many, some reasons include reducing waste, saving water, lower carbon footprint, reduce exposure to toxic chemicals, support fair wages & working conditions, support animal welfare, support small businesses & independent designers, save money & time and develop your own unique sense of style.

Sustainability and the slow fashion movement

Although sustainable fashion and slow fashion aren’t synonymous. However, the consequences of slow fashion tend to be environmentally sustainable. The slow fashion movement works towards creating an industry that benefits the planet and all people.

How to practice slow fashion?

Practicing slow fashion is easier than it looks. One should start small, like controlling the impulsive urge to buy. One must invest in long-lasting and well-made clothes of higher quality. By shopping local, you don’t only support small businesses but also ensure the quality and uniqueness of your clothes. Finally, think twice before you dispose, repair, donate and upcycle.

Over the years, runways across the world have been talking about the environmental consequences caused by the industry including sustainability, zero waste and slow fashion. While the fashion industry has improved, it remains far from sustainable.

As they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Conscious decisions displayed by more and more of us will soon amount to something worthwhile and not only save the planet, but also in style.
